0 WIP it Wednesday #37: Fallen Angels

Filled with shame and a distaste for what they have become they languish in the filth they have become.  Shrouded in an armour of dark secrets they hide throughout the galaxy; bidding their time for when they will reveal themselves.  Rumours circulate about the sin that they committed while outlandish accusations swirl about their wrong that was committed against them.  Wherever the truth lies is where they will reveal themselves.
My latest project has taken me towards the darkness of these Fallen Angels.  Catching a fleeting glimpse here and there into their true identity.  Plagued by mutations and pulsating boils they are but a former image of what they once were.  Peeling back the layers of flesh over their eyes I search for the truth behind their fall.  All that I am able to uncover is the Dark Vengeance that now fills their soul.
These Fallen Dark Angels were all derived from Games Workshops latest starter set, Dark Vengeance. Using these models as a foundation I have twisted and corrupted each of them with a series of Chaos based kits.  From Chaos Spawn, Plague Bearers of Nurgle, Chaos Forsaken, Chaos Terminators, Chaos Space Marines, Chaos Sorcerers and lets not forget about the Aegis Defence Line.  All of these kits along with some music inspired guitar string have allowed me to transfix these once proud Marines into the abomination before your eyes.
These are but half of the Fallen that I plan on mutating.  Kitbashing and converting each of them takes considerable time.  First I build each of the models then I break them down into a tortured soul of cut of plastic crack is but the first two steps in the process.  From here begins the arduous task of transfusing them with the darkness of Chaos.  Perusing through the various kits and bits laid out across the floor of my man cave I slowly begin to twist their once honourable image.  Next is the defiling of their armour through the chipping and damaging of it.  The pulsating icing on the boil is the twisted guitar strings that adorn their power armour.

This is just the beginning of the fall for these former Dark Angels....

0 Monday Musings of a Mantic #4: 1750pts Space Wolves

If Little Red Riding Hood had an AK-47 would she of simply shot the oversized wolf that wanted to eat her for lunch?  If so would the bullets be thick enough to even penetrate it's thick eternal hide?  In todays Monday Musings of a Mantic I have created such a list that will put these two questions to the test.  Now open wide and have a look at what big teeth I have.

255 = Wolf Lord: Thunderwolf, Storm Shield, Frost Blade & Runic Armour.

085 = Lone Wolf: Chainfist/Storm Shield
085 = Lone Wolf: Chainfist/Storm Shield
085 = Lone Wolf: Chainfist/Storm Shield

210 = Grey Hunters x 10: Plasmagun x 2, Power Axe & Rhino
205 = Grey Hunters x 10: Meltagun x 2, Power Axe & Rhino
175 = Grey Hunters x 10: Plasmagun x 2 & Power Axe.
170 = Grey Hunter x 10: Meltagun x 2 & Power Axe.

120 = Fenrisian Wolves x 15

115 = Long fangs x 5: missile launcher x 4
115 = Long fangs x 5: missile launcher x 4

100 = Aegis Defence Line: quadgun

1720pts

The teeth behind this list is a throw as many 2+, 3++ armour save units with eternal warrior into my opponents face. The three lone wolves and the Wolf Lord on the thunder will provide such targets to overwhelm my enemy. The two Rhino mounted units will be used to both provide cover and intimate support to the thunder wolf lord and his wolf pack that he'll be bubble wrapped in.

The long fangs along with one squad of Grey Hunter's with either the plasma or the melta will remain back behind the aegis defence line. They will provide a firebase for the rest of the army. The final and last grey hunter squad will be a swing unit that can be used to deal with unexpected threats.

I have 30 points left over at this point and I'm not sure as to how I can spend these points. One thing I have thought about is the inclusion of either Wolf standards if not two times Wulfen or maybe some meltabombs. I could also upgrade some of the power axes to power fist. I am looking for suggestions from any of you out there. Any ideas or changes to the list will be greatly appreciated.

3 STC Saturdays: An Overview of The Ravenous

hotPANDA - Up until a week ago I had been a prisoner, trapped inside my own mind.  I languished here for forty eight long days.  No one to talk to but myself.  Self reflecting in the hallucinations of my furry little mind I ponder the evolution of myself as gamer.  I examine the morale balance of our hobby; painting/modelling vs gaming vs the HOTpanda with myself.  Lost in the conversation of my own mind I was left with the following transcript.

For each of us the world of Warhammer 40k started with the birth of our first model.  Whether it was an Imperial scum bag, a Xenos freak of nature or a Chaotic follower of the Dark Gods, that first model was where you swam out of the primordial ooze and took your first step into the world of 40k.  Who did you take your first steps with?

HOTpanda -  For me it was with those skanky ass nuns of the Imperium.  Countless hours alone with ten of these nuns with guns, left an impression on my ego and a depression on my wallet that I have never recovered from.

hotPANDA - It's taken me well over a week to recover from the forty eight days you had me trapped in your mind.  Mind explaining yourself?
HOTpanda - It was nothing personal; I just needed a someone to talk to while I spent countless hours assembling and painting hundred and one infantry models and one times Vendetta.  I'm sure you understand the strain it put on my poor endangered mind?  Not the easiest of tasks but one never less.

hotPANDA - Maybe I do take it personally considering that you didn't even have the courtesy to even offer me a drink.  I saw you downing a few beers but not once did you say hey hotPANDA care for one?

HOTpanda - Like I said I had hundred and one infantry models and one times Vendetta to paint.  I didn't have time to be courtesy I had job to do and I had you thrown in my mind to keep me from losing it.  Now you didn't come back here to whine like a little school girl did you now?
hotPANDA - Little school girl?  Didn't I see a memory or picture of you wearing a school girls outfit while I was in your head?  What's that?  Cat got your tongue?  Anyhow why don't you tell me about these dalmatians that you were painting and what army they were for?

HOTpanda - They are the second incarnation of my home-brew renegade chapter, THE RAVENOUS.  They were part of the Space Wolves who were on board the Wolf of Fenris when the Red Corsairs took it down.  Over time they splintering off into a blood cult of Khorne where they spiralled into a world of their own. Consumed with with the flesh of their own they now prey upon any ship, Imperial, Xenos or Chaos, that strays to close to the Eye of Terror.
hotPANDA - That's quite the imagination you got there.  All fluff inside your head makes the walls in there look and feel like a padded asylum.  Those blood sucking wolves were not the only ones you were painting though were they?

HOTpanda - You best be watching your tongue or I will cut it off now...All that aside though you are right the Cannibalistic Wolves were not the only ones I was painting and modelling.  They accounted for fifty two of the models while the other forty nine were that of a Renegade Guard platoon.  I figure you're going to ask me what's the deal with them so here it is any how.  Think of them as that snack you have between meals.  They are just a means to an end and serve their purpose in the spilling of blood in the name of the all mighty Blood God.  Modelling slash painting wise blew the door wide open.  Game wise they make for one hell of a guard blob to throw in the face of my opponent.
hotPANDA - So why the rush on getting these servants of Khorne painting in just under two months?  You have a tournament or were you planning on housing all them in that mental institution you call your head?

HOTpanda - It was door number one smart ass.  GottaCON 2013 was the tournament and for me it is the biggest one up in my part of the woods.  Last year I had placed eighth out of sixty overall and was planning on improving that this year.  Unfortunately my experience at sixth edition was several lacking like the fur on your face. My soft scores, sportsmanship and painting were high as they comes but I was about one  victory short from breaking the top five.

hotPANDA - That's lady luck for ya.  In terms of painting though that is one hell of sharp looking army if you don't mind me saying.  Those rich deep reds and sharp contrasting blues just scream Chaos to me.  And that oxidized brass is one sharp way to create a weathered like look them.
HOTpanda - Well it's about time you start showing me the respect I deserve.  As for the colour scheme I wanted to create a unique paint scheme that would set them apart on the battle field.  I wanted them to be chaotic in nature.  I wanted them to throw away their past and embrace their future.  Blues became red and golds became oxidized brass.  The rich reds provided me with a direct link the Khorne himself.  While the oxidized brass is that of the armour of Khrone himself.  Weathered from the years of warfare and from the hate of battle itself their armour speaks that of death.  Tempering the steel of their weapons and colour scheme I spilled but a sprinkle of ice blue on to them.  Creating a stark contrast to that of the blood reds the blues balance my split-complementary colour scheme.  The red may be the dominate colour but the yellow-greens and blue-greens provides the high contrast that I was seeking.  The bonus to using such a palette is that I am not plagued by the strong tension of a straight up complementary scheme. Not wanting to tilt the balance of harmony against my favour I ensured that all other colours would be neutral in appearance.  Choosing a muted grey for their skin I was able to achieve this while creating a sickly look their faces.  The bases received the same treatment as the skin but the end result was that of an ash world.

hotPANDA - You have put a lot of thought into that painting scheme and the fluff behind the army.  It's like you are having your own personal renaissance and dark age all at once.  Your gaming side seems be lagging yet your have embraced the other side of the hobby and balanced the scale of justice between the two.
HOTpanda - You just don't stop flapping that jaw of yours do ya.  In terms of my gaming yes it lacking in terms of my grasp on sixth edition but that's due to my lack of games I have under my belt.  Prior to the tournament I had a whole two games under it.  While it may not be the best excuse it's all I got.  I figured I best put up one hell of show in terms of the ascetic appearance of my army if I was going to even show my face at GottaCON.  Not only did I lavish the army with paint but each model was lavished with conversions.  From guitar wire for tubing to forge world bits to lavish kit bashes each model is individually unique.  Apart from the Long Fangs and the Special Weapons Squad every model has a unique face.  It seemed to pay off as I had quite a few compliments on my army and had a fair number of competitors vote for mine as their favourite army.  Not to shabby if you ask me.

hotPANDA - No one was asking you but I would voted for you if I was allowed to.  There wasn't that many painted armies and the ones that were didn't have a display board like the one you had either.  There was a couple of armies that were dam sharp looking, especially that Daemon one and that Dark Eldar army.  In fact I think those were the ones that you voted for weren't they?  Anyhow, now that GottaCON is over and you are finished wiping the tears from your face what are your plans in terms of the hobby?
HOTpanda - You piece of crap, I should of never let you out of my head.  Since you're not going to stop asking me, I am planning on one of two choices at the moment.  Choice A, is to convert over the rest of my Dark Vengeance set to The RAVENOUS or choice B is to finish my nurgle Zone Mortalis squad.  I guess time will tell though as I could easily be swayed by a Daemon army if those rumours of them getting a release this month come true.

hotPANDA - Like Fleetwood Mac's eleventh album, Rumours are just that at the best of times.  As it stand right now though I don't think I will be needing any "Second Hand News" on where your sanity is heading but I ain't "Never Going Back Again" into that padded cell of a mind of yours.  Nice talking to ya HOTpanda but its best we go our separate ways.

2 WIP it Wednesday #36: Hobby ADHD

My hyperactive mind has been firing on all cylinders this past week.  Image after image flood my mind with a plethora of ideas and concepts.  Each one just as satisfying as the next.  Yet each one is unable to  captured my attention for more than a few seconds.  Puking out concept after concept the mental paintings begin to blur into a cesspool of mental diarrhea.  Like that of a double edge sword, a blessing and a curse, or a mixed bag of treats.  Regardless of what I call it they each are but a synonym for the other.  Fragmented and frustrated at my lack of devotion I bounce from one idea to the next.  Never finishing what I started.  Yet each one stands proud before me on its merits alone despite the lack of balance or feet it has to stand on...

Robots from an alternative company that is testing the waters on a new line of 25mm models.  I simply took the white plastic out of their bag and played with them for several minutes....
A Dunny from Kid Robot production that I am using to test out weathering techniques with salts...
More Robots but this time on a much larger scale; 1/12th to be exact.  Same company as the mini robots above.  This robot is called Caesar and is made by ThreeA Toys...ROBOTS!!!....
Ravenous once again but from my drop pod company this time.  Previously painted with a horrific blue skin tone I repaint them one by one in my new pale flesh formula...
Hamburger and Fries inspired art for a ThreeA Toy drop called the 10 Finger Gang...
Oh and last but not least The Fallen, my new Dark Angels Renegade Warband that is devoted to the Chaos God known as Big Papa Nurgle...
Like I said a plethora of ideas each one just as import as the next ROBOT!!!  Together they have taken over the Man Studio.  Leaving me next to no room on my desk to work.  Resorting to make shift desks such as my dogs' crate and my chair I push on into the madness of my hyperactive mind...

7 Model Mondays #11: Traitor Guard

Omega wolves is their rank.  Being the pack's scapegoat is the lot in life.  They bear the brunt of the pack's frustrations and harassment. Often they are the last to feed, or will go without food when it is scarce.  Though it does take the abuse of the pack, it is an essential role, as the pack must find a way to relieve stress if the hunt is not successful, or if a pack member is angered or stressed for any other reason.  As unbelievable as it sounds, the Omega finds comfort in it's position.  The Omega is not always the weakest member of the pack.
Todays Model Mondays features a prolific group of Omega Wolves.  Ones that are clearly not at the bottom of the pecking but rather at the top of the Omega chain of command.  They are my Traitor Guard Platoon Command Squad.  They bark orders at the rest of the cannon fodder.  They keep them inline and motivate them to do the Blood God's bidding.  Through the use of their orders they are able to turn an other mundane round of shooting into a salvo of death.  Some major feats to date for my Traitor Guard blob include an entire Death Company, ten Nurgle Bikers with a Nurgle Warlord Biker and a fraking Marloc.  The Marloc along is unreal considering the sheer amount of wounds and toughness values under its' scales.  If this wasn't enough they presence inspires all other omega wolves to run like wind.  These two orders turn this mundane squad into a force multiplier.
To enhance this squad to the level it deserves I wanted to lavish five individual models with the seed of creativity.  The first of these model blew my mind away when I saw what I had created.  Revolted by its' grotesque appearance this former Imperial Guardsman is but a glimmer of its' former self.  Spawning a giant growth of a horn out of the side of his face is the crown on this kit bash.  The unsung hero of this conversion is that of his torso.  WHile not easily visible it is the bit that gives this model his girth.  To be specific it is that of a Ork Nob.  To further establish this model as one to be reckon with I have give him an Terminator Crest; a badge of honour from that of a kill.
The next member of the platoon command squad is that of the signaller.  As you can notice from the pictures though the radios antenna has been replaced with a demonic growth of a tusk.  No longer used as a squad to squad communication device this signal uses his former radio pack as a broad casting device.  Projecting audio images of the eye of terror across the battle field he projects fear into the heart and soul of the packs prey.
A ruthless serial killer straight out of the pages of a modern day horror flick was thought behind this model.  Inspired by my fellow blogger and devote disciple of Chaos, Chris from Sippin on Paint Water, this model has to be one of my favourites.  A futuristic Texas Chain Saw Massacre like model just screams "More Blood for the Blood God" to me.
What platoon command squad would be complete without that of an agent of the dark.  An assassin perhaps or what others might call a ninja.  Then again someone has even gone as far as to call him "Deadpool".  Either way this warrior of Khorne relishes in the art of death.  Devoted to the protection and safe keeping of the Platoon Officer his lot in life is to ensure his safety even at the cost of his own life.
Last but not least out of the Omega Wolves this week is the Platoon Officer.  He is the one who receives the orders from the Alpha Wolf.  He is the one who relays that information and transfixes it into orders for his fellow grunts.  A decrepit old dog that is frail in appearance, but do not let this outward facade deceive you for it will be the last mistake you ever made.  He has survived countless lifetimes of abuse from the pack.  He has risen up above the rest of the Omega Wolves as their leader.  Ruthlessness is his virtue and instrument of death.  All of this aside the rest of the Omega wolves will mindless throw down their lives in order to ensure that he survives.

3 Model Mondays #10: Blood Hunters

The are the blood of the pack, they make the heart of it beat.  Pulsating with the wraith of Khorne in their veins they prowl the Imperium for their next kill.  Armed to the teeth for all types of warfare these warriors of of the Blood God are ready to take on any and all enemies of Chaos.  They are Grey Hunter or what they prefer to be called Blood Hunters.
In terms of modelling I attempted to imbue the essence of Khorne into each of them.  Utilizing a wide variety of kits from Warhammer Fantasy to Warhammer 40k I was able to make each them an individual.  Each and every one of them has a different face yet each of them are still a weapon of the Blood God.  Looking closely at their great company shoulder pad (left) you will find the iconography of Khorne.  While their right shoulder, captures that of their pack marking.  To further develop each squads identity I used their back packs as a means to differentiate them from each other.  Some have red dominate the packs while other squads have oxidized brass.  In the end I can quickly tell what models belong to what squad thanks to this technique.  Yet they all look like they belong to the same company or in this case the same wolf pack.
This squad is kitted out with two plasma guns and a power axe nothing more, nothing less.  Each of these weapons allows me to engage a variety foes on the battle field through flexibility.  The other members of the pack wield a variety of close combat weapons from maces, to axes, to swords.  Each an instrument of death, each a slave to their master.  They each also carry a bolter and a bolt pistol.
When it came to painting my Blood Hunters I wanted to create a unique paint scheme that would set them apart on the battle field.

0 Live from GottaCON 2013: Day 2

In the immortal words of the ultimate hipster, Beck, "I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me".  This is what must have been written on my forehead during the second and final day of GottaCON 2013.  That's right from a two wins and one lose record on day one to two more freaking loses day two.  The part is that each of my games were against two very awesome local gamers.  Cool and laid back they each provided me with the feeling of comfort as we rolled the dice together.  Each of the games came down to turn five and them having the last move.

Game 4 was against a fellow Victoria Wargaming CLub member who was rocking a Vanilla Marine mechanized force.  With him having a mobile advantage I tried my best to clog up the table while not giving him access to my two objectives.  I was able to hold his forces off on the right flank but not on the left.  As my world came crumbling down I new there wasn't going to be much I could do about it.  Clearing the two squads of marines off the objective he was contesting was a breeze when I focused my guard blob of forty traitors at him.  Despite killing both squads and his Warlord in a storm of las fire his vehicles rolled up on my objectives on the eleventh hour.

Game 5 was against some blood fetish marines.  With one objective each in our deployment zones I focused my efforts on defending mine from him.  He threw his entire army at mine and paid the price each time a squad came within 24" of my guard blob.  Meanwhile I had quietly snuck a Lone Wolf onto his objective after he ate a tank for lunch.  What got me in the end though was a lone jump priest who just wouldn't die.  I had wiped out two separate ten man assault marine squad that he had joined.  Each time with him slipping away from my grasp.  Once the bells chimed elven times and my opponent robbed me of the taste of victory.  My only consolidation was the fact that I had killed yet another enemy Warlord, giving me a five for five record.  THat's right I had five separate skulls to give to the Blood God.  I can only hope that this gift will be enough for him to forgive my lack of determination and will.  I pray to him that he does not see me as a loser.

0 Live from GottaCON 2013: Day 1

Lady Luck is a bitch and she will cheat on if you give her the chance. My first game at the 40k tables saw me pitted against a Dark Eldar, Space Marine forbidden lust. My first thoughts had me puking up my breakfast but the ones that followed hand me swallowing the puke. Completely enthralled in their sacrilegious union I became ensnared into the lie. By the time I had realized that I had eaten my opponents bait it was to late. Game one was a loss but not without its' merits.  The battle came down to him having one more victory point then me.  Despite being able to slay his Warlord it wasn't enough in the end.
Game two and three had me salivating for the taste of victory and I wasn't to be disappointed.  Game two was against Nids or more specially a Genestealer cult with a few dinosaurs to boot.  With four objectives up for grabs both me and my opponent grab two each despite valiant efforts on both our parts.  The deciding factor came down to secondary objective with me have first blood, line breaker and  once again warlord slayer.  All three of these feats were thanks to my two lone wolves who took on and murdered two Broodlords, countless Genestealers and a Hive Tyrant.

Game three had me pitted once again against those twisted Dark Eldar.  Leading there army of leather clad freaks was the Baron himself.  High on his on hubris he foolishly though he best the likes of Lone Wolf and was torn to shreds by my warrior's chainfist.  Much like game two me and my opponent were tied on primary objectives and the game was decided by secondary objectives.  With his Warlord dead and one of my Lone Wolves hunting inside his deployment zone I was crowned the victor.

With a two and one record I was more than pleased but what made my nipples hard was the fact that I had killed not one, not two but all three of my opponents' warlords.  Each of their skulls would make perfect gifts for the Blood Gods skull throne.
